Chapter Nine

Easton pushed a folder across the desk to Royce. “This is my intern project. I’d like your approval.” They had a lot to celebrate. The New York office was killing it. She was proud of the work Royce had done to make the launch successful. Sure, she’d brought him the right connections, but it had been up to him to sell his services and convert them into clients, then meet their needs. He was dealing with leaders in industry, manufacturing, and business, and if they didn’t see a need for his services, they would have walked away. The whole team was behind the success of the new office’s launch.

“You don’t have to do the intern project, Easton. You arranged the school charity and then mentored the LA office in setting theirs up too,” Royce said.

“And that succeeded because I was raised to be a socialite. I’d like the chance to put a different skill set to work.” She waited, but he still didn’t open the folder. “Go ahead. Read it.” It had been a lot of fun researching and arranging the team-building ideas for the employees. The purpose of her project was all about building their confidence so they would feel like superheroes the next time they sat at their desk or made a client call. She also wanted to recognize everyone’s hard work, so there had to be plenty of prizes as well.

He leaned forward. “You also saved the golf event that was Landon’s project. Really, I consider that a success for you as well.”

“You know what I’m going to say, right?” she asked.

“Socialite skill set,” he replied flatly.

She nodded and pointed to the folder, crossing her arms to wait.

He read the summary page and flipped through the rest. A few times, he smiled or chuckled. “Looks fun. Have Tara put it on the calendar.”

“Thanks.” Easton left. Nothing in the event would take much preparation, but it was all designed to increase cultural cohesion and friendship between colleagues. And she had a surprise that wasn’t in the paperwork Royce had just approved. She smiled and returned to her office to make arrangements.

The school where they volunteered had spring break coming up, so she decided to use the scheduled volunteering day for the team bonding activity since they normally weren’t in the office at that time. That was more time than she needed to get everything together.

When the day arrived, the staff gathered in the team training room. Easton stood in the front. “Something I learned on the first day I came to work here is how critical it is for us to know and trust each other. Like all of you, I was assigned to job shadow absolutely everyone when I started. It was amazing to see how all the jobs worked together to make Systems Aware a success. I loved getting to know each of you as well.” She walked to the side of the room and picked up several colorful gift bags, each with a large number on it, and placed them on the center table.
